Plaid

The celebration (and obsession) of plaid textiles has been passed down to me by first, my grandfather and then my mother and aunt.

I have been exploring plaid graphically for the last few years through photography, digital illustration, and most recently, programmatic generation. The following represents an ongoing body of work and exploration around plaid.

Plaid Inspiration

I’ve been taking photos, collecting images, and decorating my house in plaid forever. I’ve drawn from these sources to translate plaid in my work. The Digital Plaid was most notably inspired by Chinatown bags which have figured prominently in every move I’ve made in NYC and since.

Illustrated Plaid

The first phase of Plaid came through digital illlustration in Procreate. I was traveling a lot at the time and would spend hours on flights and waiting in airports hand-drawing plaid patterns.

Digital Plaid

I was then curious about what it would be like to translate the illustrations into pixels. I really loved how punchy and graphic these works became.

Programmatic Plaid

This project marked the beginning of my romantic and creative partnership with my now-boyfriend, then-coworker, Diogo Monteiro. Diogo took my digital Plaid designs and coded them into a generator that allows the user to define their own color palette for Plaid.
